Banjo choices

From finners56 on 6/1/2021 3:05:50 PM

Hi guys I have only been playing the banjo a short period of time 4 months approx.

I bought a Barnes and Mullins Empress banjo as my first instrument, guy in the shop said it was perfect for a new beginner (probably sales talk) when I bought the banjo it was all online due to COVID all shops were shut

I am thinking of getting an open back banjo only due to the weight of the Empress, and I assume an open back will be lighter?

Do you have any suggestions as to a reasonable banjo similar price to the Empress but open.

Many thanks in advance

Steve

Hello Steve, that looks a decent banjo, from what I can with online images you should be able to remove the resonator and the steel flange and use it as an openback, it will be very light and still give good tone & volume. I did the same 8 years ago with a deering goodtime and its still my main banjo. it should be more than good enough for years then when you get into the swing of it you can treat yourself to a high end banjo. If you really want an off the shelf openback now then the deering goodtime

Hi Conic, yes it is a fine instrument, I have no issues with it at all. Good idea to remove the resonator and flange, I am guessing that will give me a different sound and tone? Will look at the Deerings. Thanks for the kind advice.

Regards Steve
