Thanks for allowing me to join your group!
I've been playing traditional folk music since the mid 1970s, I play the squeezebox both for dancing and gigs (being in a Folk Rock band until 1981), and in more recent years, I've been playing Americana music where one band member played the banjo - so I thought I'd like to try to learn it.
I've been looking at posts on Banjo Hangout, YouTube videos etc. I decided I'd like to get a banjo thinking that as I already play an instrument that is the butt of many jokes, I am probably thick-skinned enough to add the banjo to my list of instruments!
I've settled on the Open Back 5-string banjo and the Claw Hammer style. And earlier this week, I was very fortunate to hear that the wife of a fellow musician in my Morris side had a banjo, but never got on with it. So she has very kindly lent it to me. It's a Grafton Clipper, which just happens to be the instrument that Andy Perkins suggested I should think about getting! She is considering selling it, so I might have just struck lucky!
So, after three evenings of watching YouTube tuition videos, I'm just about beginning to get the hang of the frailing right hand technique. So, I tried some chords. C wasn't too bad, but that F chord is a real stinker!
I'm planning on getting tuition from a teacher in a few weeks, once I am sure about where I'm heading.
I look forward to being a part of this group, in the hope that with your encouragement and tips, it might make my journey a little easier!
Paul
