Deering banjo

From tonytcc on 9/14/2015 11:33:25 PM

I'm looking at treating myself to a banjo - from a tangle wood Union 24 to a deering

Im thinking along the lines of eagle II /kavenaugh or a Sierra - both about £1500/£1600 from eagle.

Wrestling with blue grass (it's a slow game !) as well as gigging with some Morris folky stuff with the black pigs.

Anyone had any experience of these banjos or the shop.

Not familiar with those particular models but Eagle Music is always worth a visit, very helpful and non pushy and not too far from you I think.

While I support the favourable remarks about Eagle, I'd like to suggest, especially if Bluegrass is on your 'to do list', don't overlook the Recording kings 35, 36, 37 and 75.
Of course , my first choice is my pre war RB-1 (ask Chris Cooper and some of the usual suspects here ;-) ), but the RK-75 I have comes a very good second.
The pot of the banjos I mentioned is all the same, so depending on the neck wood choice, hence the resonator veneer, you'll end up with a bargain, considered the potential of these instruments.

hello Tony, I went from an £80 no name to a goodtime 2. I love the deering goodtime which I have has for a couple of years and is still great. Now one day I will upgrade but I was not keen on the eagle 2 or sierra I am also not keen on gibsons prewar or not but my money will go on a recording king or I may join the waiting list for custom hand built j.romero banjo which may better suite morrisy/folky stuff ( if I had the money ). you can listen to one on youtube, Jason romero playing wild bill jones

RK35/36 is the best Banjo available for the money. I got a 35 from Thomann in Germany, 3 year's ago and it's getting better the more i play it. It will need a set up out of the Box (but that go's for all new banjo's)

When you buy mail order out of a box, what did you have to setup?

Everything :) New Nut, Action, String's, Head Tension. That cost me £50, from a good Luthier. If you did it yourself £20 max, that's for a Nut, and String's.

Oh forgot the odd Fret needed leveling as well, easy with a diamond file :)

Thanks good buddy, I would expect a tool of the recording king calibre to be of better quality out of the box or am I expecting too much. saying that, they do sound fantastic...
