New American Banjo Teacher in London

From sethswingle on 10/3/2016 8:43:01 AM

Hey all,

Thought I should introduce myself; my name's Seth Swingle, and I'm an American banjo player recently installed in London.  I'm looking for banjo students in the area and on Skype, and also in finding some people to play with.

About myself: I've played banjo since I was 10, and play basically all the old-time styles (clawhammer, index-lead and thumb-lead 2-finger, 3-finger, and up-picking, as well as some minstrel-era stuff).  I'm really interested in field recordings of older banjo players and in obscure tunings and banjo-specific repertoire.  I was Mike Seeger's apprentice for a year, I've been the Virginia State banjo player a few times, and I've been in the Clifftop banjo finals the last 3 years in a row (no blue ribbon yet, sadly).

If you, or anyone you know, is interested in broadening their knowledge of authentic old-time banjo, please drop me a line at sethswingle@gmail.com or give me a call at 07 943 698154.  Oh, and I've got a website at sethswingle.com for the curious (with pictures of lots of weird banjos).  Hope to meet some of you in the flesh soon!

Hi Seth, welcome! I've been playing since January so am still new to the instrument. I do have a teacher that I love going to, but would be interested in ad-hoc lessons, always good to learn new things from different people! Where in London are you based? What are you prices?

-mooweesworld: I'm living in Klburn, northwest of Regent's Park, so pretty central. My rates are £30 in Kilburn or via Skype, or £35 if I have to take the tube out to you.

-stewball: that's a great Banjo Hangout name, yourself! Glad you like the site. I tried to put enough pics/info on there that it wouldn't be boring for people who just wandered in.

Welcome to UK5! There's a "find a teacher" page on the Hangout - it might be worth putting something on there to attract some students!

Here's the link: banjohangout.org/teachers/
If you look towards the top right of the page, you'll see "Are you a banjo teacher? Create your own free listing" - click on this to create your teacher profile. Good luck :)

Hey Seth, welcome to London! If you're interested in jamming with people, you should check out some of the jams that go on here - in particular, the bluegrass jam at The Cask in Pimlico, every Sunday at 4:30 and the old-time jam in Richmond. Find me on Facebook and I'll fill you in on all the jams in the area if you like - I'm also always up for a pick, but I live in South London, so not always convenient :)
