Just a thought

From Blue Tuesday on 12/18/2016 6:43:18 PM

Next week will mark four year since I took up the Banjo so I would like to share a thought I had recently when a friend bought a new car.

I have no idea why I bought a banjo, just woke up on Christmas Eve and had to have one – and I’ve played it every day since. I was fast approaching 50 so must have had some sort of mid-life crisis when I got the banjo bug; with that in mind here’s the thought.

We complain about the price of a Smile bridge, Blue Chip thumb pick, hand tooled Bison strap, new strings etc. yet all of those things cost less than a tank of petrol and I buy one of those every week, just to get to work! Another thing - no matter how fancy or how many banjos’ I buy I will have to go a long way to spend the price of a new sports car.

So when it comes to down to it I’m very happy with my "crisis" – it's worth remembering people don’t laugh at you if you play the banjo after your hair’s started to thin and if you exceed your ability your unlikely to end up in prison or casualty.

That puts it into some sort of perspective, doesn't it.

I had the same experience when I was 20 years old. Sold my motorbike and bought a Banjo. My dear Mum thought I had lost my mind. My life has, is and will continue to revolve around Bluegrass and the Banjo. Destiny.

Fortunately I still have the motor bike, and a couple of old classic cars but I have had those for some time. The only down side to the banjo is I should have done it a long time ago. It would be good if I could find a teacher in the North West Lancashire area but not had any luck yet so progress is a little slow - does not stop me enjoying the process though.
