Heyo all

From Arborhill on 8/28/2013 8:26:42 PM

Getting my first White Mountain this Friday (very excited)... just wondering if you guys have any advice on set-up right out of the box. It is walnut with a rosewood tone ring and 11" frosted head.

Thanks,

Arborhill

I think it'll sound good right out of the box, but I eventually install Renaissance/Elite Amber heads on all of my banjos. I still have the Virgil Lawson Sinker Maple bridge on my Whyte Laydie and I'm in love with the rich tonal character of it.

Congrats on buying a great banjo - I think you'll love it. I was just sitting here pickin' and I thought about writing an email to Ron just to tell him how much I love my WL.

After you've played it for a week or so you should check the head tension (look for BHO postings about the Steve Davis coin and straightedge method).

Also, the neck will likely be a little grabby from the lacquer and after a couple of weeks I recommend using some 0000 steel wool lightly on it to smooth it, followed by a hard wax job.

I have a very similar model. I added an Ome Sweet Tone tailpiece to add some string tension, put a Bart Veerman mystery wood bridge on, and had the nut reduced to bring the action down a bit with the medium strings I use. Now she plays too beautifully.
