Yates Walnut RS #1

From Cleveland Grasser on 5/16/2012 6:03:17 PM

I just plunked down my banjo fund for this thing.  Hopefully it will be in my hands by the end of the summer when it is paid off.  Alvin at Morgan convinced me this was the right choice.  So after all of my contemplation and talk of going on banjo pilgrimages this summer, I went for one sight unseen.  I am way excited about this thing and plan to visit it in banjo jail this July.

I remember that one. That one is a killer. It sounds big and open. Good choice!

That is a good thing to hear from the RS#1. I was originally looking for a Maple with crack and decay, but I have noticed that Yates banjo tone seems less dependent on wood type. Of course this is from sound files, so I may be off. Also, I have liked the sound of many no hole rings, so this one fits the bill in all sorts of ways for me. Speaking of Boxcars, I need to stay away from the new casino that moved into Cleveland this week so that I have this thing in my hands sooner than later.

I own walnut#2, and even though mine has a plated tonering and marquetry on the resonator, it's pretty much the same. I promise you it will be the best banjo you've ever held. It will make you a better player, the neck will feel like it was made for your hand. Saying you won't be disappointed is a gross understatement. So stay away from the casino!

Warren, what type of rim is in walnut#1? I read that you used a thicker rim until recently. Thanks.

Stopped into Morgan yesterday. Drove all day to check out what I was putting down the big bucks for. Morgan has a great selection. I made sure to play plenty of other banjos (Yates, Sullivan, Huber, Stelling). So many good instruments on the wall. I struggled to compare RS Walnut #1 to the rest for the first hour. Into hour two I began to feel more and more comfortable with my choice. My banjo was extremely well balanced and had a very rich sound. I found all of the Yates to be quite good. The shelby was seemed a little less easy to play up the neck (probably needs a slight adjustment) than the other yates. I feel much better now as it went against everything to not play it prior to plunking the cash down. Great feel, really excellent tone. There were louder banjos, but nothing was as balanced as my Yates and the other two RSs. There was a top tension (RK-47) that I liked a lot too. I will say that the newer ones with the thinner rims seemed louder. I hope I can get as good at playing as it already is at ringing.
