Yates BT-1949

From Dave_RB75 on 5/19/2013 9:34:45 AM

Hello all. Anyone in the group have a 49?  I love the tone on Donnie Little's video and Ron's set-up video outside at a festival.  Just wondering how it compares to a regular RS Maple?  Thanks.

I have a Bt-1949. And just sold a maple RS the 49 has a sweeter tone I think that has a lot to with the 20 hole ring the rs had a nole hole ring. The 49 has that classic
Sruggs tone thats what Warren was after when came out with the 49.The maple RS
was a fantastic banjo as are all of the Yates banjo's. A Skillet head is in my future love
the tone of the mahogany yates. Dave shoot me an email with any questions.Gman.

I too am in love with the tone I hear on those two videos. I am very happy with the tone on my Yates RS mahogany no hole...but there is something really special in the sound of that BT-1949. GMAN - sitting behind it - are you hearing the tone that we hear on those videos? Have you toyed with the setup at all and arrived at any conclusions? I swapped out my Yates Presto tailpiece for an actual Gibson 1950s tailpiece (like that of the Skillet Head) and found that it moved my banjo's tone toward that of the sound I hear in those videos - more airy and open. I like the change. I would love to sit down for a couple hours with Warren's complete lineup (especially the BT-1949 and Skillet Head) and see whether they make me willing to trade in my RS mahogany. Anyway, I would love to hear any and all comments about your BT-1949. Do you have any sound clips GMAN? Thanks.

Well, I for one would love to hear these two banjos played back to back by the same player, on the same tune, that uses most of the neck. My thinking would be the main difference would be a brightness or mellowness of tone based the maple vs mahogany neck. And, BTW loving my Skillet Head! That banjo is teaching me a lot about pulling tone because you can hear a distinct difference when your hand is in the right position. Good training for a player 2.5 years into it.
But Gee, that BT-1949 sure sounds sweet also, I would have had a tough time making up my mind if that was out when I got my Skillet.

Thanks, guys. Your responses are just what I was looking for, and they jive with MY personal observations in a comparison with other models. I have also realized that what we hear when we're BEHIND it doesn't do it justice. For that reason I try and record test clips of changes that I make- strings, picks, etc., or let somebody else play it. My Yates is an RS Mahogany with a 20-hole unplated ring.

I play my SKillet facing the wall so I can hear more of it bounce back at me.

I got my BT-1949 and I love it!! It seems to be louder and sweeter than my other Yates, a RS Mahogany. The tone is exactly what I was looking for. I think Warren nailed that classic Scruggs/Granada sound he was after!!

I just bought a Yates Bt-1949 on consignment from Robin Smith, anyone know who owned it?
