RS75 vs RS Mahogany

From Bribak on 2/1/2015 10:42:55 AM

Hello all.  Just curious...Does anyone have any idea (structurally) what the differences are between the RS Mahogany and the RS75?  The only differences I see on the website are OLD GROVER STYLE BRIDGE vs RON STEWART DESIGNED BRIDGE and 20 HOLE TONE RING vs NO HOLE.  Has anyone played both of these and if so, would you care to compare the tone...neck shape...etc?

Any input appreciated.  Thanks.

The only Yates model that I have not played is the RS33 arch top. I always come back to the RS33 (the original) design. With the no-hole ring, it just beats all the others hands down, for me. I had convinced myself that my next banjo would be either a BT49, or a RS75. I played 5 Yates Banjos in a row. I left the shop with a mahogany RS33. Go figure! The tone in my hands, was just better on the 33. The neck is slim, but not flat. Just an excellent banjo.

Beardog, thanks so much for your comments. I own an RS 33 mahogany too - from 2010 when they were still calling it the Ron Stewart model. I am very happy with it but every once in a while I hear a clip from an RS75 and think they sound awfully fine. The RS33s though seem to have a rattle to them that I don't hear as much in the other Yates models. I love that rattle. Sounds like ball bearings sliding around in a pie tin. Anyway, short of sitting down with the other Yates models and doing a direct comparison, I can't ever imagine parting with the Yates I have now. Thanks again for your input.

I played a 2009 Ron Stewart with a no hole in plated ring. Played great sounded Ok. Then I purchased a 2013 RS75. The sounds and tone of the RS75 way better. Best banjo I've ever played.
