I'm a picker on guitar, mandolin and tenor banjo, a teacher, and an engineer. I have a curious relationship with the 5-string. From my teen years with my brother and through my youth there was always one around until there wasn't. I've taught beginning 5-string, at every school or store with which I've been associated I seemed to be the go-to guy for anything folkish, but I never had one of my own. From 1976 to 2020 I had no 5-string at home on which to practice or grow. Now that I do find myself feeling like a beginner, yet not thinking like one.
