Vintage Antares 4 String Banjo

I am not a banjo player yet.  But I am interested in learning and have an opportunity to purchase a vintage Antares 4 string banjo and would like to know opinions on this banjo.  Is it a good brand or considered a piece of junk.  The seller said he thought it was from the 1980's.
