I found the banjo on a much broader historical quest to figure out how my ancestors and their people made it from Europe to here, what consequences are accrued in such a massive migration, and what cultures have molded me throughout family history. So, I started getting very fascinated with the Scots-Irish of Appalachia and the remnants of the old country and the old ways. I picked up the banjo mostly as a storytelling accompaniment, starting with some of those old ballads (like, the transition from English "Matty Groves" to the Appalachian "Shady Grove") and eventually wanting to put music to some old fables and stories and epics of historical Europe. And Pete Seeger. Because fascists.
