Ive been playing guitar for about 16 years... Im not very good at it though, or at least not as good as I feel I should be. Music theory makes perfect sense to me, I just cant figure out how to use it to my advantage. You know how when you read the same story to a little kid over and over, eventually he'll learn to recite the book forward and backward without actually learning how to read - thats a great metaphor for my musical prowess thus far. Ive played percussion in a few bands, Im no Neal Pert in that category either but it very much appeals to my primitive instinct, as with most musicians - keeping a beat is second nature to me. Its probably the most fun Ive had playing with a band! My grandfather played Uke on the SS Kittyhawk back in WWII, just a leisurely strummer - Ive been trying to carry on a bit of his legacy since he passed away. Ive found it to be a very soothing and cathartic instrument. Its a great way to spend a saturday morning if you have nothing better going on, I try to play along with the cartoons! Banjo is my most recent exploit... my younger brother just bought me one a few weeks ago. More than an artist or musician - Im just flat out stubborn! He knows I love the challenge of new and different things, and this is basically what he came up with. Frankly, Im not a big fan of bluegrass or banjo music in general, but Im not above it. I consider myself allergic to modern county music, but Ive learned to play a healthy portion of it simply to expand my understanding of music. Ive always believed "you cant figure out where youre going until you know where youve been" - understanding all parts of the history of music is fundamental in creating something new and unique! Ive had a fantastic experience so far networking with other musicians. Ive found the subculture to be the glue that keeps me grounded in true reality as opposed to the manufactured version of the world portrayed in media and corporate America. Ive made great lifelong friends, developed an advanced understanding of social behaviors, found an awful lot of cool and rare music, and most importantly - Ive learned that everything in the world is a mere matter of perception and that the concepts of musical composition and artistry can be applied to other facets of life as well. Sometimes lifes infinite complexities can be understood through a healthy dose of woodshed pickin' with freinds... and perhaps a bit of influece from the wildwood weed!
