I love kid's songs. Lullabies, counting songs, funny songs, all of them. I've been reluctant to play them on the open stage in front of adults, but the few kid's songs I have played for adults have been well received. People love "Ladybug's Picnic" and "My Martian Cutie (Number 9)", so I'm going to start playing more kid's songs.
I've worked up an arrangement I like for Elizabeth Mitchell's version of the traditional tune "Little Bird, Little Bird," so I've been practicing it quite a bit. The lyrics are as simple as anything, but there's no obvious place to breath in this song. I have to be very strategic about breathing or I run out. I might play this tune at tonight's open stage. It's not quite ready for prime time--I still goof up the breathing sometimes--but I like it so much I want to share it.
For weeks I've been practicing "I Don't Want to Live On the Moon," a wonderful sentimental tune from Sesame street. That one has stretched my skills with chord changes. It's still stretching my skills, but if I can remember to keep the speed down, I can play it well. I'm going to play that one tonight.
For both of these tunes, I need to remember to keep the speed down. I have a terrible habit of speeding up as I go.
This morning's practice was mostly these tunes, but I did get myself to practice my actual homework. Good thing too, as my lesson is tonight. I practiced some exercises my instructor gave me based on the "boogie woogie" progression: 1 3 5 6 b7. I played this in G, C and D a few different places on the neck. I tried a little improvisation using this progression, but I wasn't really satisfied with it. I also did some exercises based on chord shapes, designed to help me learn chord tones on the second string. I really needed to practice my homework more, but I spent most of my practice time this week playing kid's songs.
