Taidhg Burke, songwriter and frontman for up-and-coming Irish 'gypsy blues' act The Calvinists, passed away earlier this week at the age of 32.
In 2010, Burke's unknown band were fortuitously featured in an article in the New York Times, after a travel writer for the paper happened to attend one of their shows. The journalist waxed lyrical about the four-piece from rural West Cork, prompting a number of television and radio appearances for The Calvinists in their homeland, and the release of the bluegrass-influenced 'Anchor' as the group's debut single.
In late 2011, a re-recorded version of 'Anchor' (a song where Burke cursed his inability to escape his hometown) appeared on The Calvinists' debut EP, 'Durango', and a music video for the track 'Memphis Belle' followed soon afterwards. The latter was a stripped back, largely acoustic number that cleverly and delicately explored the similarities between a love interest and the famous 'Memphis Belle' aircraft.
Some of Burke's more poignant lyrics are sure to now carry added weight in light of his premature and untimely passing.
