Seven months ago I began and improbable journey of building a banjo after being inspired by luthier Bob Thornburg. Bob has built and s displayed hundreds of gourd banjos. I decided I wanted to build an open back banjo and I wanted to do as much of the work as possible but I did not want to invest heavily in tools, so whatever i did had to be done by hand. I found Don Kawalek on the internet. I called him and explained my plan. Don was very helpful. He agreed to send me the very rough stages of a banjo. Yesterday im finished the banjo and it is awesome. It has a beautiful sound, it looks great and it was a fantastic experience. During construction I would send Don a email about a question ( I had a lot) He would quickly respond and I would move forward. The main piece that I did not do was building the pot the rest of it was the work of my hands,. My banjo teacher Stevan Jackson said it was every bit as nice as my Bishline Okie with my apologies to Rob Bishline. (he may be overstating but it really does look good,) and Don Kawalek is to be thanked) ps This is a totally non commercial endorsement, I get nothing for it, but this was the only place I could find where a non Luthier could get such good results)
