I've been teaching both clawhammer and bluegrass banjo for more years than I'd care to count, and the timing (and all the subtleties) cannot be taught, or shown, with tab or music notation.  "By Ear" is also necessary to be able to play with others.....constantly monitoring oneself.  BTW...timing isn't just one thing...it's everything.
