I´m a banjo player… sorry, owner.

Tuesday, February 5, 2013

Three weeks ago, this day, I walked down to the post office to get my parcel from Germany. It was a dark and cold evening and I was a little bit late from my job. There was two quite heavy boxes, one with a banjo, a Recording King RK-35, and one containing the case that a bought at the same time. With one box under each arm I walked my way home on the snowy and slippery roads of Kalmar. I´m just in this town temporary for about half a year, and my plan is to teach myself as much as possible of the essential skills of banjoplaying, during my spare time here. Thank God for Banjohangout and Youtube!

Well. After three weeks of struggling one hour per day with forward and reverse rolls, I must say that this instrument has to be treated with lots of respect. If you try to force it into something it doesn´t like, it will kick back. Or at least make a weird noice. But sometimes I have the feeling that it loves me too ;-)

Nevertheless, I am having a great time with "my precious" and my neighbours are not making to much disturbing sounds from their apartments and I consider that as a good sign.  My name is Tomas and I´m a banjo owner. Soon I will be a banjo player. Then, I will remove the towel from the resonator…

Bought my first banjo back in 1972. It was quite useless and the guy in the music shop really fooled me. I made a switch with a friend and got me a model railway instead. 30 years later I decided it was about time to take up the banjo again. I found my Recording King RK-35 in the middle of january 2013 and when I picked it up for the first time, it was like coming home. At this stage I'm happy with exercising forward-reverse rolls and tryin to play parts of "Will the circle.." while I'm listening to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band...
