I have played the 5-string for 27 years, starting with bluegrass. After two years I converted from "3 finger" to "4 finger" playing (adding the ring finger) which I have used ever since. My banjos are all custom with shorter (22") scale lengths. About 10 years ago I took up mandolin/irish tenor banjo and now play regularly for contra dances. During this time I learned to read music on the mandolin/tenor banjo. Inspired by this, I have recently been developing a system to read musical notation on the five string, based on five basic closed scale positions and single-string playing. This has given me access to the wealth of tunes published in fiddle books (as well as the world of music in general ! . My longer-term goal is to be able to sight read (on the 5-string) up to speed as well as an accomplished fiddler or violinist. Someday I will publish a method book on reading notation on 5 string banjo.
