So, I've been a member of BHO for a few years and have gotten a lot out if it but haven't contributed much at all. I suppose it's time to give back, if blogging is giving...
So, first a little about myself vis a vis the banjo.
I came to playing the banjo by way of guitar, I've played guitar since I was a kid, about fifty years now. It's odd to see that in boldface print. I played rock n roll, it was what I grew up with. Rock tinged blues, rock tinged jazz, rock tinged "folk".
At some point when I was fifteen or sixteen I got introduced to the music of John Fahey. There was something in his sounds that resonated deeply with me. On my first official "date" I dragged my girlfriend to McCabe's Guitar Shop to see Fahey perform.
I met a guy when I was about twenty, an honest to god Wobbly named Mike Brown, we worked together on a construction job and formed a close friendship. He had a vast record collection of roots music, including the Harry Smith and Alan Lomax anthologies. I was hooked. I loved it all, from shape singers to cowboy minstrels, but some stood out and felt like heart music. Dock Boggs' haunting voice and weird banjo. Uncle Dave Macon, Bogg's almost polar opposite in emotion. Mississippi John Hurt. Murder ballads.
