I have been playing standard old time clawhammer tunes like Ducks on the millpond, but also really enjoy the music of Ken Perlman and Howard Burson. Howard's innovative melodic banjo improv on his album/ cd Cider in the Kitchen is a must hear. I like Ken's clawhammer of "Tequilla Mockingbird". and a lot of Irish and New England tunes. I have a Gold Tone OT800, but with a regular neck, as opposed to the long neck version which is more common in this model. Tubaphone tone ring, scallop/cutaway, wider string spacing, great sound. doesn't hurt my bluegrass picking. two different birds entirely. both very rewarding.

began with 2 finger style in?.Gravitated to fiddle tunes. In a band by 1980, sloppy, but enthusiastic. teaching since ? to present. switched to bluegrass banjo in around 1987. Play banjo, fiddle, mandolin, autoharp, harmonica, guitar. teach same. now redeveloping skills in melodic clawhammer style. love it. working on cello. play in Duck Soup, a bluegrass/ folk band since 1999; and Mulligan Stew ,a celtic band, since 1986. Fill in with straight forward bluegrass band on either mando, fiddle, or banjo, depending on who's missing. Got remarried in 2006- my wife has a great singing voice, and learned upright bass, and we play together with the Fonda Starr (that really is her name) band. monthly square dances and old country. all 3 bands are on facebook.she has become bass player now for both duck soup and mulligan stew as well. Playing a lot more clawhammer fiddle tunes- reels, jigs, hornpipes, etc... retired.
