Advice on Banjo purchase

I have posted before regarding an old S.S.Stewart 20th Century banjo.  Very frustrating trying to keep it in tune. Actually it's so hard I've discarded playing for months. Would like some advice on purchasing new banjo, under $1000 Aussie dollars. Brands I should avoid and best mid price brands.
