Disparaging Banjo Player Comments

Sunday, January 21, 2024

I am always amazed when I attend a non-bluegrass jam that I am greeted by another jammer (e.g. a person who has took up the ukelele three weeks ago) who feels compelled to tell me a banjo joke which is usually disparaging to me as a player (e.g. What’s a definition of a gentleman.  A person who can play the banjo but chooses not too.)  I have heard from those who play the accordion, bag pipes and tuba are frequented by such assaults as well. I have thought of comebacks (e.g. What is a definition of a (insert instrument).  Someone who lacks the dedication and ability to play the banjo).  I take the banjo  seriously and usually log approximately 500 hours of practice a year.  I wondering if I am being over sensitive about this, and wonder if others have experienced the same treatment.
