In 1979 I took college book money and bought a banjer. So, in four decades, I've tried finger picks a bunch of times. They hurt. (Fingertips are very sensitive, for good reason) You can't feel the strings. For all intents, they suck. Plus, I thought a banjer is loud and obnoxious enough without them. I've talked to a bunch of banjer pickers that basically agree, but they found a way to make peace with finger picks. Sort of like one does with a metronome.
Well, a few days ago, I was sort of winding down a studio session. I leaned over and grabbed the banjer. Something reminded me about the jam the week before. I was watching our banjer guy. It just looked like he was rolling his fingers, but basically above the strings. His picks were engaging like they should. So, I dug around and found my bag of fingerpicks. Grabbed the large thumbpick and the largest fingerpicks in the pile. Slowly, I started rolling my fingers. For some reason, it started working. Comfortably. Wow! Not fast, but so what? It worked well enough to write this. Now, just make it a habit. It's still fun to have a breakthrough after all these years.
