Here is Martha Campbell on the new Eastman Whyte Laydie banjo. I'm tuned to double C (or there abouts) but most fiddlers - including myself - play it in D. So, tuning up to double D is how I would do it with a fiddler. Buddy Thomas' version is the most well known and he plays a pretty notey version of this tune which I love. I remember talking with Joe Dobbs while doing his radio program "Music From The Mountains" on WVa Public Radio. He was telling me about some young new-old time fiddler asking him why he played so many (ie. too many) notes. His response was priceless, "Because that's the way Buddy Thomas taught it to me!" Like I said, love this tune. Miss Jennifer says it is one of her favorites also! You should hear us together.

By request. Thanks Mikey for asking for this one. This tune appeared in a Mel Bay compilation called Banjos 2000 and I don't think I have ever put it out on one of my albums. Perhaps it is time for a new one with it. I wrote it around 1996 or 7 (I think) when I was playing one year at the Black Mountain festival in North Carolina - yes around Midnight. SO quite and eerie in a good way. The fretless Bowlin with Nylgut strings has exactly the sound I wanted for it. I tune the banjo to low double G so the fingering is like double C/D. I've always heard it in my mind with Jembe and Digeredoo. I have (somewhere) a cassette tape of each with banjo but not both. Tall Ted would be on dig version, not recalling the jembe player. Ah well, like I said, need to do a full album with it, with said accompaniment. What a great night it was...Till then... Enjoy

Recorded this morning (Sunday the 5th) with Deering Good time tuned up to D. First two passes, basic bum ditty, second two, with basic drop thumb (bum pa dit ty, thump a thump a, did ty did ty - whatever). Kept it as basic as I could but used drop thumb instead always fifth string cause it does sound nicer that way. Hope this helps illustrate the difference. Hope I'm enough through the first cup o joe!

As promised, here is the latest recording of Spotted Pony as a solo banjo piece. I just played it through a few times so nits and warts are still there that I might not accept for a commercial recording. I recorded this using the new Jason Burns 11" Tubaphone style banjo and an Audio Technica AT 2020 USB mic direct to Audacity recorder on my 2008 iMac. No effects have been added but I did put silence at the front of the tune and a fade out at the end. I have found this mic to be quite nice - wonderful actually for recording to my computer and thank Audio Technica for their fine equipment. They have been my mic of choice for banjo for many years (for dances I use the Audio Tech Pro 7a on both banjo and fiddle) and an endorser of my music.

Introducing the Dan Levenson Trio! A new direction where I play fiddle or clawhammer banjo and am joined by guitar and bass. The guitar player here is long time Boiled Buzzard Annie Trimble with Greg Gendall on bass. This tune written by Tom T. Hall is a favorite with many bands. We first recorded it with the Boiled Buzzards on Early Bird Special.
