Recorded Mar 29, 2011 in my living room, using Tyler's new Zoom recorder. For practice and educational use only. Our take on this cool song written by Ian Tyson. This is based on Tony Rice's arrangement. As these are practice tracks, expect a few mistakes or occasional fumbling, and a little conversation going on too. We were laying these down one after another to learn each other's material. I'm sharing a few select tracks here which I think are cool takes on these tunes ... some fun listening just the same. For what it's worth, enjoy... I am playing my Nechville Athena banjo; Tyler is playing his Santa Cruz guitar.

This is a recording from a live gig at Brickhouse Pizza in Spartanburg, SC on July 22, 2012. This is our high-energy take on this cool tune. Sung here by Wes Wyatt, also on guitar. I'm picking 5-string. Thanks to Jamison Smith for capturing the gig from the main board to his laptop.

Wes Watt (guitar and lead vocal) Frank Eastes (banjo) Bob Hinch (dobro) and Carroll Foster (bass). Thanks to the Country Jam, Blacksburg, SC for this recording. And, thanks to John, who owns Country Jam, for adding the freight train whistle on-the-fly as we played the tune.

This is a recording from a live gig at Brickhouse Pizza in Spartanburg, SC on July 22, 2012. A cool tune by Norman Blake. Wes Wyatt on lead vocal and guitar. I'm picking 5-string and doing some pretty weak harmony vocal... For some reason my voice was off that night. But still a fun listen. Thanks to Jamison Smith for capturing the gig from the main board to his laptop.

I'm still dusting off some of these cool old jam session recordings... This is a cool traditional fiddle tune "Gold Rush" ... and this is a realistic tempo too!! Recorded at a Knoxville, TN jam session 12-27-06 in Bob Holmes' living room on a digital recorder with pickers in a circle. Nice relaxed picking... Frank Eastes (banjo) Bob Holmes (guitar), Jim Lethgo (guitar), Marvin Gideon (mandolin) and Dennis Wilkerson (bass) ... thanks to Bob Holmes for the recording. We were all sitting in a circle with a digital recorder on the floor. The banjo is a little soft in the blend, I think the recorder was aimed away from the banjo LOL, but it's in there enough. Posted in memory of Marvin Gideon, my good friend, rest in peace.

I stumbled across this old recording today as I was looking for something else on my computer, a nice relaxed version of this timeless tune, recorded at band practice March 2016. Me on banjo, Dickie Brown on guitar and for the life of me, I cannot remember the bass player's name. All three of us were plugged in and the placement of the Zoom H2 this was recorded on favored the banjo. Well, it is a banjo website after all LOL!! I hope you enjoy, a truly enjoyable tune to play.

I'm slowly digging up these old jam recordings from last year and will post several one at a time, over the next few days that I've never shared here before. This was recorded sometime between early March and late April 2011 on a Zoom digital recorder. I'm just now getting around to sharing some of these... This is me picking on my Nechville Athena and Tyler is picking his Santa Cruz dreadnought. We do only one pass through the tune but it give you the idea anyway. Enjoy.

I've always thought this cool instrumental by Tommy Emmanuel would lend itself to banjo, so this is what I came up with. Starting from scratch last Friday and over the weekend, I finally settled on this adaptation of the tune. Tommy does this tune in different keys, and it's easy to find examples of him playing this in D, Eb, E, F, and G, depending on where he puts his capo. I decided on D to grab the lowest note on the banjo. I rendered an MP3 of my tab, to full speed of ~130 bpm, about where Tommy plays it. For what it's worth, I hope someone gets something from this. Reference recording for the tab posted--view here.
