I'm playing a hot rodded Gold Tone Bob Carlin clawhammer banjo with wound nylon strings tuned down to Low A-modal.

I was jamming with my nephew Jakob Liljenwall, a Vancouver based musician, when this tune began to emerge. Jakob came up with the opening riff on cello banjo and it rolled from there. Perhaps next time we see each other we can record it together. I've included an MP3 high fidelity recording for those who would like to don a headset and get a better picture of how this instrument sounds. The Soundbird, a custom Paul Roberts tenor style banjo by Gold Tone, is a BanjoCrazy.com exclusive. Visit http://banjocrazy.com/ where all Gold Tone stringed instruments are available and where you can also read interviews with premier banjo players like Adam Hurt whose gourd banjo CD "Earth Tones" I had the honor of recording. Thanks for listening. Hope you enjoy. Banjo Crazy PauL

An Arabic melody I learned many years ago from the singing of an Irish American friend. I haven't been able to find the tune in this version. It's possible he made it up, being known to do such things. In any event it's a melody that sticks with me - one of those 'phone numbers' that ring through to an exotic mood. From what I can glean off the Internet, "Jamil" means beautiful. "Abaya" is a loose overgarment, the purpose of which is to conceal the shape of a woman’s body.

Here we are, ladies and gentlemen, on the bottom of the Grand Canyon, listening to the dynasours clogging and playing their own peculiar style of clawhammer (these babies have got some claws in 'em). We're down here in the sonic spectrum, gliding along in double low E. Man, the world is slower down here.

Strung my Gold Tone Bob Carlin model with some silverwound nylon strings, tuned in the baritone range, cFCFG, like double C seven frets down from standard.

This is one of those entrancing Middle Eastern melodies which calls out to me to play on cello banjo. I'm playing 5-string cello banjo in Sawmill - GDGCD, an octave below standard.

Here's a Greek tune in gCGCD on a Gold Tone CEB-5 five string cello banjo. In this version I'm picking. I previously posted of a clawhammer arrangement of this piece with a made-up name of Think Greek. A few years ago I became devoted to 5-string cello banjo and have developed a strong kinship with it.
