Here's a traditional reel that used to be played as a hornpipe, as found in Capt. Francis O'Neill's Waifs and Strays of Gaelic Melody (1922). On bodhran is Dubliner Robbie Walsh, the 2008 All-Ireland Fleadh Champion, and on guitar is Gabriel Donohue from Athenry. With gratitude to Mel Bay for letting me upload this here, another sample from my first book/CD, Complete Book of Irish & Celtic 5-String Banjo - find it here: http://www.melbay.com/Products/95759BCD/complete-book-of-irish--celtic-5string-banjo.aspx

The classic piping tune that we hear on St. Patrick's Day in front of St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. Funny that it's a Scottish tune! From my third book, Easy Irish and Celtic Melodies for 5-String Banjo: Best-Loved Airs and Session Tunes (2013). Here's the hugely popular reel played slowly, a play-along track that match the tab and chords in Easy Irish and Celtic Session Tunes for 5-String Banjo: Best-Loved Jigs and Reels (68 tunes). The chords can be re-harmonized endlessly, and this is a bare bones arrangement of the tune played up the neck in Celtic fingerstyle. From my third book, Easy Irish and Celtic Melodies for 5-String Banjo: Best-Loved Airs and Session Tunes (2013). I get more requests for this from fine ladies, who used to dance to it back in the day! This famous reel medley is associated with Michael Coleman, the legendary stepdancing fiddler from Sligo and New York City, whose impact is still felt worldwide at sessions. I learned these tunes from Coleman's 1934 recording, incorporating Sligo-style "rolls" and slippery triplets, also being influenced by New York's Sligo-style masters - fiddlers Andy McGann, Paddy Reynolds, Tony DeMarco and Brian Conway. Andy and Paddy are gone, but they left behind a wonderful musical legacy. I consider myself very lucky to have been in their company, especially at Andy's laid-back sessions in Manhattan, where the mighty Joe "Banjo" Burke, who had amazing songs, also played regularly. Joe, Andy and Paddy are three of my early mentors and heroes. Driving the tunes on guitar here is string wizard Gabriel Donohue from Athenry, and keeping immaculate rhythm on bodhran is Robbie Walsh from Dublin, now the 2008 All-Ireland Fleadh Champion! The well-known Irish reel. This features Gabriel Donohue on acoustic guitar and Robbie Walsh, the 2008 Fleadh Ceoil All-Ireland Champion on bodhran. This is a traditional Scottish strathspey from the Celtic diaspora, Capo Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada. It features the "Scots snap" - a sixteenth note followed by a dotted eighth note - a kind of rhythmic accent that reflects the rhythm of Scots-Gaelic as spoken. Gabriel Donohue adds some tasteful piano accompaniment in the Cape Breton tradition.
