I heard an mp3 of this, and decided to try it myself. If someone knows who the author is, I'd like to add it to the credits....

I learned this from a collection of very old Stanley Brothers material, taken from recordings made between 1947-1952. I'm guessing that Pee Wee Lambert was the singer, as it didn't sound like either Ralph or Carter (could be wrong about that). Possibly for that reason, I don't recall them doing the song that much later on in the years, sans Pee Wee.

I first heard this one nearly 30 years ago, from the old Dry Branch Fire Squad back when Johnny Lee Baker was singing tenor with Ron Thomason. Here's something I did back in 2006.

I first learned this from Ralph Stanley. The song is in F, I just tuned the banjo for the standard G tuning and played it that way as a learning experience. Come to think of it, everything I do sounds like that!

I'd like to be a small part of life
With some few things to achieve
Just to know I've been a fruitless cause
Would make my poor heart grieve...

Not sure just who this came from, but it's one that has been recorded by many. I didn't see any other version already posted here at the hangout, so here's one...
