Well, I ran out of cusswords which might effectively hold the ring in place, so I went for a mechanical solution.
In the Old Days, banjos came with three EXTRA LONG hooks, for stabilizing the ring when replacing the head. Then, after it was far enough down for a few regulars, the extra-longs would come off and go back in the case.
