From my years of observation, many Silver Bell tone rings were removed and scrapped. It appears that this banjo may be one of those that originally came with a tone ring. It would be easy to tell. If the shell is slightly less than 11 inches in diameter, and if the flat plane of the drum head is about 1/4 to 3/8 inch below the plane of the fingerboard, then this banjo originally had a Silver Bell tone ring. I can't count the times that people I knew who had acquired a Silver Bell Dobson simply threw the tone ring away to "improve" the banjo.
