Heels are made narrower, assuming "finger shape" in relation to, or to accommodate the reinforcement brace

From left, 12" Stewart - no brace, heel is relatively wide; vintage Sears - brace (removed), heel is narrower; SSS Special Thoroughbred - brace, heel is much narrower and finger-like, its contour slightly larger than, but matches that of the brace; 11+1/2" SSS Thoroughbred - brace (removed) more or less the same as in the case of the Special T.
