I recently made two long necks, one with a brass tube-a-phone tone ring and one with a mastertone type flat head. The tube-a-phone is not as punchy as the flat head but produces a sweeter sound with more sustain. As you would suspect, the flathead works better for fast bluegrass tunes and the tube-a-phone works well for the folkier stuff. I think they both sound great, each with its own personality

I have to agree with raymond66, I have spent the last few days going from my recently acquired Gibson RB-180 and my PS-5 Vega. The difference is just as raymond66 says. I do prefer the neck of the Gibson and the sweeter sound of the Vega. If I want to capo on the third fret and play bluegrass, the RB-180 wins hands down. But, for what the long neck was intended, until I can compare LJ's banjo to an ODE long neck, IMHO, LJ has created the best of the long neck world.
