Despite being a no-frills banjo, the Deering Goodtime does come with a geared 5th peg. That certainly makes tuning a whole lot easier. Instead of having a 5th string nut, this banjo uses a zero fret setup with a railroad spike to hold the string down onto the 5th fret.

This makes it easier to fret the 5th, too. I was going to get rid of mine and install a pip until Zepp pointed that out.
