Deerskin head on my Fretless

Posted 6/13/2019 5:28:45 PM

A coworker of my Dad's gave him this hide fresh off the deer. My dad taught me how to flesh and dehair it when I was 13 or so, then it was put away in storage as rawhide with plans of tanning it some day. 4 years later I bought my first fretless banjo. A Deering Goodtime. I wanted to put a hide head on it, but wasn't sure where to start. Then my dad said "you could practice with that old deer hide we never finished" so yeah. I did! In my pre-internet days all I had to go on were some papers from the library. It took awhile and I felt I was bound for failure, but it came out amazing. The sound is way plunkier then calf or goat skin, but in a good way. It sounds and looks so cool and unique! Definitely a life experience I will never forget! I use it all the time.
