Steve, please tell us all about the beautiful banjo in the foreground; the deep pot one!

My my banjo inthe forground is a half inch 2 ply shell (curly maple) with a Tubaphone tone ring made by Bill Rickard. THe pot is just under 4". That's pretty deep. I thought I could cut it down if I didn't like it.  But I like it!  The hardware is all raw brass that I’m letting tarnish to a nice dark tone. I made the neck pretty chunky and the fingerboard and spacing a bit wide. I gave it a nice frailing scoop because I like that 19th fret cluck! I just love it! What a great sound!

The folks at a jam that I frequent were of the opinion that frailing would be drowned out in a bluegrass jam. Not so. When it’s my turn to take a break, and I lay into this thing, it just barks.

I’ve made several different bridges (half-moon style) and experimented with various head tensions and string gauges. That’s part of the fun – fine tuning. I can make her sound real tubby and oldtimey, or get it to almost crack like a bluegrass banjo, depending on the setup. I have decided to set it up pretty bright and modern.

This Tubaphone ‘jo makes a kind of slight growl when I push it hard. That sound/feel reminds me of tube amp distortion, which a very sweet even-harmonic musical sounding thing! I’m a happy picker planning to build some more.

She's stained with printer ink and finished with 8 coats of wipe on satin varnish.
