Johnny's six string banjo

Johnny St Cyr played six string banjo with Louis Armstong's 'Hot Five' in the early 1920's. The sound was slightly less strident than its counter part the tenor banjo and tuned as a guitar. The development of plastic heads have given the banjo extra volume and brightness which aids the instument considerably in a loud group settings to cut through the mix.
