It's a dead one, on the beach in Cape May County, New Jersey, last fall (late September, I think, in 2007). I saw quite a few there, more than I expected to see that time of the year. In Connecticut, where I live, my experience is that they appear on the beaches in May. They come ashore in droves then to mate and perhaps to lay eggs. Primitive, ancient creatures and as harmless as they are ugly, despite the spike and their scary-looking claws that wiggle alarmingly when you turn the beasts over.
