Eds Wooden Banjos |
This was the first banjo I made. The neck and the twelve corner angles of the pot are fitted with fret wire more slender than any I have been able to find on the market. I acquired this fret wire when I started making dulcimers many years ago. I tacked it on the pot as a reminder of the hooks which are quintessentially banjo. Hesitating to leave the back open, I covered it but drilled four small holes just hoping it might help the tone quality. I was pleased that it had a sweet tone, but too much sustain to be very banjo-like. It got me started on building banjos, learning by my mistakes. Dimensions: Length overall 33 1/4″, Neck 22 1/8″, Pot 11 1/8″ (outside diameter), depth 2 1/4″ thick, Wooden head 10 1/2″ d. String length 24 3/4″. Materials: Neck and Head: walnut, Pot: white pine, Back: spruce with decorative center strip of sumac Nut & markers: bone tailpiece, bone and brass nails.
