Neck attachment detail

Posted 5/24/2010 4:33:53 AM

The neck is drawn tight against the rim with a acorn nut located at the end of the pot. This nut tightens against the end of the dowel stick which bears against the pot at the neck heel side. The 1/4" by 20 all thread rod that extends through the dowel stick is anchored to a 3/8" diameter by 1-1/4" long barrel nut that is housed within the neck heel. The barrel nut is commonly sold as a furniture bolt connector and is sold at home improvement stores such as Menard's, Rockler, and many well-stocked hardware stores. The cross dowel nut shown in the photo has a offset hole, but I normally use the type with a centered hole. My preferred brand is sold as "Midwest Fasteners Handi-Pack Cross Dowel Nut #87846". The hollow dowel rod and long section of all thread rod is really a matter of looks and convienience. If you're using a thicker rim such as 3/4" the neck can be bolted directly to the rim without the need for a dowel stick.
