For Sale: Alan Munde Instructional Book - Festival Favorites Revisited - $10 USD

I am tapping out. With my hand issues I finally admitted to myself that I must give up trying to play bluegrass banjo (struggles with clawhammer are still encouraging). I just sold the last of my resonator banjos and find myself holding onto quite a collection of instructional material.

Up for sale is Alan Munde's Festival Favorites Revisited in unused condition (I already sold one but just discovered that I had purchased two copies). Drawn from a series of recordings released on Slim Richey's Ridge Runner label in the early 1980's, this compilation contains an incredible display of banjo musicianship.

I have my whole bluegrass banjo instruction book collection listed. The items can be bundled to save shipping cost.

For Sale: Davis The Butch Robins RB-4 - $4,250 USD

The Davis Butch Robins Signature Model is a premium professional instrument designed by Tim Davis as a meticulous replica of Butch Robins' iconic 1930 Gibson RB 4 9583-1 Capo spikes at 7th and 9th frets. Comes with the original Hardcase . have any questions, please ask. Thanks for looking!
As Tim Davis announced a few years ago:

"So, so excited to be working with Butch Robins to recreate his famous RB4. We feel like this replica will be the closest banjo anyone's ever been able to create in modern banjo building.

We're taking exact measurements of the banjo and are now in the process of having a CAD drawing made to replicate the neck to perfection.

Butch has graciously allowed us to disassemble the banjo and measure the tone ring, to not only get the weight and the measurements, but also the perfect formula to recreate the tone of this famous banjo.

To cap everything off, we're going to torrefy the neck and the 3-ply maple rim and use hot hide glue in its construction and chrome plate everything. It's still going to be a few months but we are looking forward to this a great project to add to our Legends Series, along with Don Reno's Nellie.

Structural & Wood Specs. Torrefied Neck: Made of premium French Walnut that has undergone torrefaction (heat-aging) to mimic the dryness, stability, and acoustic response of 90-year-old pre-war wood. Neck Profile: Custom-shaped using high-precision CAD mapping to replicate the exact slim, ergonomic feel of Robins’ original 1930 neck profile. Torrefied Wood Rim: A premium 3-ply maple rim that is also torrefied to maximize natural resonance and vintage punch. Hardware & Tone Formulation Custom Tone Ring Formula: Tim Davis analyzed the exact weight, metallurgical composition, and dimensions of the original Gibson ring to pour a custom-alloy replica tone ring. Flange Configuration: Built as a classic one-piece flange bluegrass banjo using standard 11-inch rim dimensions. Aesthetics: Complete with historical replica inlay patterns on the fingerboard and peghead, perfectly matching the original pre-war Gibson RB-4 cosmetic styling.

For Sale: 1940s Kay Bandello - $300 USD

Up for sale is a Bandello made by Kay in the early 1940s. This was an inexpensive instrument aimed at getting beginners started on the road to the mandolin, guitar, or tenor banjo. It was intended to be tuned in 4ths, but I keep it in 5ths like a mandolin or melody banjo.

The body has a spruce top and maple rim, and the neck is attached with two screws. This one is all original including the friction tuners. It's in great condition, with a few scattered dings around the edges but no damage or repairs. The neck is very straight and the action is great all the way up.

For Sale: Gibson Mastertone 1926 RB-3 - €2,000 EUR ($2,280.67 USD)

Original 5 String 1926 Gibson Mastertone RB-3, Ball-bearing, FON 8447-7

In 1926, Gibson experimented with a ball bearing system of supporting the tone ring. Part of the reason for this was that the skin heads of the day were subject to humidity and heat, but it was also seen as a design improvement. The ball bearings are supported by a system of strong springs, the intent being to hold the head at a constant tension. The tone ring is a cylindrical shape with holes, unlike the later years flat head and arch top rings, although the outside profiles is the same as an arch top, and it appears to be an arch top until one learns it's a ball bearing.

For Sale: **SOLD** 2020 OME Southern Cross Custom Bluegrass Banjo - Extras! - $2,400 USD

My relative is a member of Banjo Hangout ( <a href="https://www.banjohangout.org/myhangout/home.asp?id=9267" target="_blank">banjohangout.org/myhangout/hom...p?id=9267</a> ) and is the original owner. He asked me to sell this instrument for him as I have a lively side business buying and selling middle/high end guitars.

The banjo was made in 2020 and was bought new from Mass Street Music (Lawrence Kansas) in 2020. If interested they still have their web page up describing this specific instrument ( <a href="https://massstreetmusic.com/products/ome-banjos-custom-southern-cross-megatone-bluegrass-banjo?srsltid=AfmBOopaC7n5dGu_lxLM5-jWJjr2yH1x0btzKnGFm5R-JxCZ-yQA5UC8" target="_blank">massstreetmusic.com/products/o...Z-yQA5UC8</a> )

The banjo has typical mild wear from being played. There is a small ding on the back of the rim (see picture) that is not visible when the resonator is in place.

Factory set-up and neck set was designed for an 11/16 bridge height (multiple bridges included).

If desired to change armrest will need to use the (included) hooks/nuts to replace the two that are soldered to the original armrest.

This is a hand-built, custom banjo, Maple rim, Walnut Neck/Resonator veneer,"Megatone" 200 Flathead Tone Ring.

Satin finish.

Don’t miss out owning this amazing instrument!

Late 1880's SS Stewart Special banjo for sale. Serial 19873. The scale is 26 5/8" +/- and the pot measures 10 1/2". Currently strung with nylguts (always has been) and has a skin head (not original). This banjo is all original, at least as far as I know. It has the original ivory rosette on the tailpiece. The dowel stick is original, as is the turnbuckle brace, and has not been moved to accommodate current playing preferences. No extra holes in the rim (same reason). I bought it from a gentleman who told me that his great-grandfather was the original buyer. You can see the owner's initials and year of ownership on the case. The case is a very nice TKL and the banjo fits it very securely. This is an all original banjo in great condition for it's age and is almost 130 years old. I'm open to offers.

For Sale: Custom Granada Style Gibson Banjo with 1928 Prewar Wood Rim - $8,750 USD

The hangout emails are NOT working for me. They seem to disappear, and never get forwarded. Please send a text 812-972-5197. Thanks in advance.

History of the banjo:

Back around 2007, First Quality Music (along with many other banjo builders) was searching for the right formula to mimic the sound of prewar tone rings. They had Bill Sullivan's prewar flathead 'Myrtle' analyzed, and went through several metal pours to get to their final formula for the Sullivan brand. Eric had purchased a 1928 tenor banjo wooden rim, and cut it down to provide the 'old growth' wooden rim to pair with their advances of their metallurgical endeavors.

After several revisions, they produced a pour that when paired with the flathead-cut 1928 prewar wood rim, it sounded almost identical to 'Myrtle'. That Sullivan banjo ROCKED. Since I was a highly valued customer at FQM, I talked Jeff and Eric (after much pleading and begging) into selling me that tone ring along with the cut 1928 Gibson wood rim.

Since the wood rim is a bonafide 1928 Gibson arch-top, cut down for a flathead tone ring, replete with a prewar serial number (see pics), I was able to have a neck with the Gibson name built around this prewar rim. So the tone ring is essentially an un-plated, V35 Sullivan ring, paired with this cut-to-a-flathead, prewar rim. My aim was to create a new Gibson flathead build that sounded like 'Myrtle', for a fraction of the cost.

I had master luthier Ronnie Bales build a mahogany neck and a highly quilted resonator (perhaps Honduran Mahogany?). He did an excellent job on the neck using a customized Bella Voce style inlay pattern (I added the first fret inlay Style 5ish since I didn't like it being plain). I then chose the inlay on the peghead (Style 5) to match the custom 1st fret.

I was going to put some resonator concentric rings in, but the resonator wood was so stunning, that I decided to keep it as it was. So what I ended up with is that I accomplished what I set out to; I created a prewar sound in a tasteful, new mahogany banjo build. If you live around the Louisville area, you're welcome to confirm my assessment. This became my dream banjo.

No trades, as I am now retired and play very little, so I am selling off most of my high-end investment instruments. My user name on Ebay is the same as on BHO, so check out my 100% positive feedback of some 400 items. Also, check out my other ads here on the Banjohangout.

The TKL/AVS series banjo case is included, and double wall boxing will be used if shipped. I prefer to hand deliver this, so if you live around IN/KY/TN/OH/MO or reasonably close, I will work with you to make that happen. Shipping has gotten incredibly expensive, especially with insurance.

I have also included a picture of the prewar Gibson serial number of the tenor wooden rim that was cut down for the V35 ring, as listed on the banjophiles site.

Additional notes: I do have Keith tuners on this banjo, although they are a bit stiff. I have reached out to them to see how to oil, but I have not heard back from them (I know he passed, but was hoping Beacon was still in business). Also, there is one VERY small knick by the second string on the pegboard, but the rest of the banjo is pretty much immaculate as far as I can see.

Thanks--Dave
