This is from a live performance . Crowe does two breaks on this.
The tab is to the Intro,The first, and second breaks. Pure Crowe all the way.Pay attention to the dotted 1/4 note in the second break, second measure of line 2. And Crowe does some 1/8 slides( or hammers, take your pick) without hitting another string at same time. But you can do it if it feels more natural

Interesting Observation on BHO

I can tell that BHO is shifting from both styles of banjo being posting. Now, all or mostly what I see, is old time 2 finger or Clawhammer no later than the 1800s Ha for sure. It's just that my students love Clawhammer but not the really remote ones that are mostly being posted now. They like the Clawhammer style but not so many songs that they've never heard of...The people who post them probably don't make a living teaching banjos. I think BHO is becoming an Banjo engineer based History site...

All this is amusing to me is all and not meant to Belittle anyone who likes remote "Library of Congress" Clawhammer and two finger....Ha for sure....Jack

p.s. I know this has been brought up before but students don't like to learn songs with no Chords whatsoever as they can't have anyone accompany them. Chords help define the melody but they just see a bunch of notes which they have never heard of before...I know I will not make that happen and BHO is becoming a History of Ancient Music even though in its time, it was what people played and so it goes....Jack

Hi everyone. I'm a complete newbie here so I don't think I can post a link yet, but I would love to get hold of a tab for Dock Boggs's 'Hard for to Love', from the original 12 Songs recording (1929). The Hayes Shepard version would also be fine, but its the Boggs version I've been listening to. I think its a two-finger Kentucky style but there's something weird going on with the drop thumb, I think. I can't seem to get that percussive repeat. Thanks.

For those of us who are untraditional banjo players it's hard to find tabs. Try finding 'The Kids Are not alright" , or any punk or alternative song. Frankly.. I think clawhammer banjo is amazing for punk rock, and juiced up classics.. Think Social Distortions remake of Alone and Forsaken.. Yes.. so.. I digress. Its hard to find tabs, and while I admire picking a song apart, there is something to be said with learning it in a day or two.

Found an amazing tool. It's on the Play Store.. not sure about Apple as I'm an Android guy.. but.. it works pretty damn well. Does include Banjo with tunings in Open G, Double C, Sawmill, and Open C (Left hand included) Just direct it to a Youtube video, wav file, or microphone and within seconds it will spit out tabs.. You have option also to convert any chord to available bass inversion, and simple or precise voicing, and basic or precise chording. It's subscription but very affordable.. I can't even remember... 9 bucks a month?? Worth it.

Note, it does not transcribe all notes and I'm good with that.. It presents chords only, but once you have those you can create riffs etc. Like I said, I play clawhammer so I'm not sure if 3 finger pickers will see any use in this but for those of you who thrive on a good rhythm banjo, it's perfect.

Check it out.. The more banjo users who adopt it.. the more likely banjo remains an option. Now.. go learn a punk song. :)

I've uploaded the Duet version and the individual 1st and 2nd Banjo parts for this piece as well as an mp3 of the Duet. You can just play the 1st banjo part as a Solo...but the 2nd banjo part is a good workout in triplet figures above the 12th fret. The mp3 runs at 140bpm. Tuning is standard gDGBD.

This technique of playing the melody on the bass string is a very common one in the period. It is usually written in 2 voices, so the solo or 1st banjo sounds a bit like two banjos. The bass string notes are accentuated over the chords to give it that effect. Done right, it is a cool technique. I hope y'all enjoy it.

Has anyone seen or made clawhammer banjo tabs for “Fare Thee Well (Dink’s Song)”? I haven’t been able to find a clawhammer arrangement and I’m not sure how well it naturally fits the style, but it seems like it could work as a simple, slower piece.

It's one of the earliest documented American folk songs collected in 1909 by folklorist John Lomax. It had a local oral tradition at that point, but Lomax’s was likely the first recording. It was on a wax cylinder, which was later damaged. So the only surviving recording is a version of it sung by Lomax’s son, who remembers his dad singing the song to him when he was young.

Alan Lomax’s field recording efforts traveling across the United States to capture traditional music helped preserve an enormous amount of early American folk songs that might otherwise have been lost. If anyone is not already familiar, it is a fascinating story for anyone interested in early American folk music (as I suspect many of us clawhammer players are).
