Bill, this is a truly wonderful performance. Most of the very old fiddle tunes like this one have a classic, unadorned simplicity to them, and a mistake that is often made by today's bluegrass and old-time musicians is to overly embellish them when rendering them, as if we are embarassed by their simplicity. I think you and Radford have struck just the right balance, providing a very fresh take on an old tune without muddying it with a lot of self-conscious and unnecessary ostentation.

Of course, I am a true believer in clawhammer/three finger duets, and this recording shows how successful that pairing can be. There here is something hypnotic that occurs when the three finger roll is gently layered over the bum-ditty clawhammer downstroke, as is so masterfully done here. The tempo is just right, not rushed. The old folks could easily dance to this one. You provide a pure, clean, and rhythmically pulsing rendition which provides the solid yet elegant foundation. Radford introduces the three-finger version gradually, and after walking softly behind you with the melody for awhile, gets adventurous with some very nice harmony and counterpoint. This has it all. I gave it five stars, for sure. I wish I could give it ten.

Pour that man another one, and get him to sit down with you and record a few more!

Oops, a typo. It should read "There is something hypnotic that occurs when the three finger roll is gently layered over the bum-ditty clawhammer downstroke, as is so masterfully done here." I'm getting old.

Very nicely done. I am just beginning to appreciate the Clawhammer Style playing. I guess I have been in love with Bluegrass for so long, I failed to expose myself or appreciate the other styles. Thanks for sharing with us.

One of my favorite Minstrel tunes. Great interplay between the style.
The long slides and harmony parts are great.
