Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time
A current favorite. This really is a *fiddle* tune - a lovely and haunting one. Normally I play quite a bit differently when fitting in with another instrument. But instead this is me trying to be a little more accurate with the melody, and trying to sound like the version I heard on Christian Wig's "Lost Indian" CD, and he got it from Melvin Wine of course. The structure is interesting. AAbAACC is a good guess (though I don't actually start and stop it in those places here). The low 'A' part is played twice, then just three beats for 'b', a short 'howl' (the fiddle plays a low A I don't have on the banjo - unfortunately), then two 'A'-parts again, then the 'C's

Sounds great! What playing method are you using? Sound a little like 2- finger.

Interesting that it sounds that way. It's just clawhammer, though I have a somewhat note-y style ("why play just one note when you can play six?"). I do have a few 'gimmicks' that you might be hearing, in particular an alternate string strike, where I hit the third and first strings at the same time with my index and middle fingers. Also the second and fourth strings - though in this tune I try to fret the second string to make an octave with the fourth (sounds better to me than the modal E-D pair). That might sound like at two-string pinch in fingerpicking...
I try not to overdo that one though, or it starts to sound muddled or - worse - precious.

Cool technique. My banjo teacher used to mix clawhammer with 2-finger... in the same piece. I play 2-finger up picking, sometimes with a 3rd finger thrown in, and some "Clasical" AKA guitar style... nowher near as well as you play. MORE!
