Good job,I play these old hymns much the same,on the first three strings.However,I find that the melody doesn't stand out if you move it to the second string.I try to keep it on the first string.If a pitch required is lower than the D on the first string I usually play strings 2-3-4 to keep the melody on top.Make sense? You might try rolling the 5th string in there once in awhile just for color.
