Genre: Fiddle/Celtic/Irish / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time
Terrapin Ridge Ramblers Trio: Ray Thraen, fiddle, David Brown, guitar, Joe McNally, banjo. (I wish we had our piano player for this...missed you on this Judy!)This is not strictly old-time I guess, as I am 3-finger picking this, sans picks however. But we like to think that we are doing this in the spirit of Old Time, however one defines that. We do play it many times though, unlike most would in a typcial Irish session. I learned this because I have a brother named Phil. This jig is in the key of D. It is one of those tunes that doesn't want to resolve, as both parts end on a C chord. We resolve it by playing the triplet that usually takes us back to the A part, then hitting a low D note for resolution. I first learned this on the guitar and transferred it to banjo at Ray's urging. I managed to find all the notes (in open G tuning) either open or within a nice tight 4 fret range (9-12), with liberal use of fretting the 5th string. I particularly like how the low D rings at the start of the B part. I get a 2 octave range there, although the tune only requires 1 octave. Enjoy and please comment.

Lovely interplay between banjo and fiddle. I discovered that at Banjo Hangout, 3 finger picking can be included with Old Time (you can read about this in a blog of mine). It was a relief not to have to choose between Scruggs, melodic or single string styles since now there's Old Time 3-Finger Picking.
