I prefer a metal thumbpick for a bunch of reasons. Some folks like plastic. Here is a recording that compares the two. Which is which?

So the first clip sounds better to me--more punch; second one sounds a little "sleepy". Are you saying the first one is the Propik all metal thumbpick?
