Genre: Fiddle/Celtic/Irish / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time
A couple of clawhammer jigs, played on my nylgut strung spun-rim banjo. "Sally Hunter" is a Scottish tune composed by Niel Gow, which I learned off a recording of Jordi Savall playing it on the treble viol. "Seven Stars" is an old English jig that I heard played by Bellowhead.

Good timing on new melodies for me. My head wants to bounce along in time! Sally Hunter has a minstrel feeling. Who influenced who? The British Islanders coming to America or the minstrels performing in the British Isles?

Although Niel Gow ("Sally's" composer) predates the minstrel tradition, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old-time_music mentions his distinct influence on the short stroke bowing, which is part of what gives old-time its characteristic drive (and fits perfectly on the banjo.) I don't hear so much influence from (at least modern) Irish fiddle styles, which seem more slur-oriented, but lots of Scottish tunes sound very "old-timey".
