Genre: Old Time / Playing Style: Clawhammer and Old-Time
Earl Collins learned this from his father, William. Earl was born in Missouri, moved to Oklahoma, and ended up in Southern California, where my guitar teacher hosted a jam where I remember getting to play as a new clawhammer player. Earl was kind and encouraging. He passed away soon not more than a year later.

Very nice playing Janet. This tune is going on my "to learn" list.

Thanks, Chris. It's #91 on the Slippery Hill website (with well over 1000 fiddle tunes by the original old time fiddlers). I learned it by listening to a mandolin lesson given to my husband by Mike Compton. It's also in the Miller-Koken Collection of American Fiddle Tunes book.

Very nice Janet... and nice story behind the tune as well. Cheers!

Very well done. While listening in the other room, my wife said "Wow..that's pretty!" I've been looping it to learn ever since. You could have played it a dozen more times...just beautiful.

Thanks, Ken and Phil. Funny, but I was playing this tune on my little gourd banjo when I read the above, so I'm getting my dozen's worth. If you want my tab you're welcome to it. I've also been given more info on Earl Collins on another forum.

I'm not sure the tab would do me any good for two reasons. It sounds like you are probably playing a two finger up picking style which I am unable to do. I might be wrong. Also I haven't read tab in so long that it would take me forever to catch up. So far my clawhammer rendition seems to fit well with what you are playing. Again...thanks for posting.

Glad you like it. It's nothing but clawhammer. These days I'd rather learn by ear, too. The tab just helps me remember.
