This is truly one of the all-time great old-time stringband recordings of the late 20s. Tommy Jarrell's father, Ben is on fiddle & the two wonderful banjos here were Frank Jenkins & DaCosta Woltz. Both were probably playing 2 slightly different 2 finger styles, Jenkins up the neck & Woltz in the lower position. Jenkins' rhythmic high chord style was sometimes called "seconding." Frank's son Oscar played with Jenkins Mountaineers a bit later & much later with Tommy Jarrell & Fred Cockerham on 2 County LPs.

Hi Gail,
thanks for the information on Jenkins' playing style. It really adds a richness to the music on the Da Costa & J&J&C albums. Do you know whether there's any contemporary musicians who play in this manner?

Kirk Sutphin plays both styles, as does Tom Mylet, who lives in Winston & who played banjo for a number of years in a band with Kyle Creed (who also fingerpicked!) I play the high chord style from Kirk but have adapted it to our local Piedmont style by adding with more rolls & some melody.
Pat Conte with the Cane Brake Rattlers in NYC plays the Woltz & Jenkins styles as do a couple of his bandmates, BIll Dillof and TOm LEgenhausen. If you google them you might find some youtube videos.
